Metromile Insurance Update FAQs
Wasn’t Metromile already an insurance company?
Previously, Metromile had been partnering with a separate company (National General Insurance Group) to underwrite our policies and manage all claims, so the claims process could feel disjointed. Since customer satisfaction is of utmost importance to us, we are now underwriting our own policies so that we can oversee the entire claims experience.
How does this affect me?
When your policy renews (we will let you know as this date approaches), in the event that you need to file a claim, you can expect the process to be fast and seamless. Our previous underwriter (National General Insurance Group) used to manage the claims process, but now Metromile will be in charge of the entire experience. This means that you will have a dedicated claims professional that ensures your claim gets filed quickly and fairly. Additionally, as a technology-driven company, we will also be introducing new updates and features that will continuously improve the experience.
When is this happening?
You will be able to take advantage of the new and improved claims process when your policy approaches its renewal date. You will receive an email from Metromile at this time, but you can also login to your dashboard and navigate to the Policy section to see when your renewal date is. Please note that this update has not officially launched in all of Metromile’s states at this time.
Do I need to do anything to take advantage of this?
Due to legal requirements, in some states, customers will need to resign their policy documents. When your renewal date approaches, we will be sending a series of emails. You may also login to your dashboard at that time, and you will see a notice if you need to resign your documents.
Can I trust that Metromile is financially responsible?
We recently raised over $190 million in funding which we used to acquire an insurance carrier. We also set aside the majority of the premium we receive to cover claims. This allows us to always have more than the required amount of funds to oversee claims. Additionally, our claims team is comprised of industry experts with over 20 years of experience at major insurance companies, with both extensive knowledge of best practices as well as plans to continuously improve the experience.
Do I have to update my policy?
Our previous underwriter, National General Insurance Group, will no longer be underwriting personal policies for Metromile in IL/NJ/OR/VA/WA. If you reside in one of those states, you must accept the upgrade to stay with Metromile, but this is a good thing! Since we will be overseeing the whole claims process, there will be more efficient claims handling and smoother customer experience.
